Granite is an igneous rock, formed from a matrix of interlocking mineral crystals (predominantly quartz and feldspar), and is found in outcrops in many countries around the world.

It is extracted from the ground, cut into slabs and then polished using diamond abrasion techniques. Due to the fact that these interlocking mineral crystals are also complemented by an array of varying minerals throughout the quartz, each and every slab will be completely unique.

A downside however, is that it can only tolerate heat to a certain point, so can be damaged or crack upon contact with something very hot. It can also crack, chip and scratch when knocked or scaped severely, and with lighter more porous granite, it is more prone to staining.

Yet, granite is still a very popular choice for kitchen work surfaces, as a strong and durable material. It is less porous than marble, where dark granites can in fact be non-porous, making them less susceptible to staining. They are long lasting and can maintain their sleek and polished beauty for a lifetime.
